Katie Loves the Kittens
Written and Illustrated John Himmelman
Review
When Sara Ann brings home three little kittens, Katie the dog's enthusiasm frightens the kittens away and Sara Ann mistakenly thinks Katie doesn't like them. Will Katie get to be the kittens' friend?
The pictures of Katie and the kittens are adorable and help to portray the feelings of Katie as she tries to figure out how to be a friend. I liked this book more with each reading.

Darling, simple illustrations tell Mr. Nice Wolf's story of following footprints in the snow, in an attempt to find a new friend. Surprises await the ending of this story.

Duck
Written and Illustrated by Randy Cecil
Review
Duck is a wood carousel animal who longs to fly. One day a small, lost duckling wanders into Duck’s life. They become inseparable. However, Duckling doesn’t show any signs of flying so Duck straps the duckling to his back and sets out to find some real ducks. Will Duckling learn to fly and if he does will he leave Duck? It is a charming tale with a strong message of love and friendship. The illustrations are fun and colorful (oil). Although the book is for children K-3, the message is for any age. I highly recommend this book.

Metal Man
Written by Aaron Reynolds, Illustrated by Paul Hoppe
ReviewA middle-grade boy has a friend in the neighborhood "Metal Man," a sculptor who makes artistic creations out all kinds of scrap metal that his mother calls junk. Usually he just watches, but "today" in the story the metal man lets the boy choose some pieces and come up with an idea that the mentor welds into a treasure for him. This story is written in "street talk": "It don't look like nothin' yet; that ain't art, etc.," and so may be difficult for some readers to follow easily. Bold illustrations in browns, oranges, and blues enhance the "street" feel of the book. Nice African-American selection. Could be useful with art curriculum. AR level 2.6, 1/2 point

ReviewA coming of age story about an adopted girl living in Philadelphia. Macey, whose nickname is "Niner", is the adopted daughter of a working class single father. Her mother has left the family and Macey is missing one of her thumbs. She meets a runaway named Eugene who is overweight and is the focus of ridicule from the neighborhood kids. The story didn't really hold my interest and the obsession Macey has with her missing thumb was too much.

Moving Day (Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls, #1)
Written by Meg Cabot
When Allie's parents announce that the family is moving, Allie's sure her life is over. She's not at all happy about having to give up her pretty pink wall-to-wall carpeting for creaky floorboards and creepy secret passageways . . . not to mention leaving her modern, state-of-the-art suburban school for a rundown, old-fashioned school just two blocks from her new house. With a room she's half-scared to go into, the burden of being "the new girl," and her old friends all a half-hour car ride away, how will Allie ever learn to fit in?
This book has a flavor similar to Amber Brown is Not a Crayon, about a nine year old girl who is facing a challenge that many of our students face, the challenges that come when your parents decide it is time to move. Meg Cabot handles this topic very well. She also slips in rules to live by having the main character Allie keep a list of rules girls should live by. I enjoyed this book and think that it will be a hit with 3-6 grade girls.

Melrose and Croc: An Adventure to Remember
Written and Illustrated by Emma Chichester Clark
ReviewMelrose decides to give Croc a lovely surprise for his birthday, but things do not go as planned. In fact, Melrose ends up being rescued at sea by Croc after a storm comes up. If you are looking for a nice "feel good" type book on friendship, this might fit the bill. I found it to be about average. The paper it is printed on is not wonderful. It has a slight yellow tint. The illustrations are engaging, but might not be large enough if you tried reading it to a whole class. In Utah where students are not often exposed to the sea, would they relate to the story? I'll try it and see.

Criss Cross
Written by Lynne Rae Perkins
This book is about three friends on the brink of adolescence. There's Debbie, who makes a wish that, "something different will happen. Something good. To me." There's Hector, who listens to someone playing the guitar and decides that he wants to learn how to play the guitar also. Then there's mechanical-minded Lenny who finds himself attracted to Debbie. The characters spend spring and summer wandering about their neighborhood, "criss crossing" paths. The downside to this book was that it jumped around a little which made it difficult, at times, to follow. I still thought the book was fun and gave me a little insight to how young adults think and feel.

What-the-Dickens: The Story of a Rogue Tooth Fairy
Written by Gregory Maguire
This book is a slow start, but once you get into the storytelling it gets more interesting. This book may be difficult for some readers because you need to focus on the tooth fairy story and suspend what you need to know about the circumstances of the family.
This is the story of some children that are left with an older cousin during a storm. The storm is terrifying and the family is cut-off from the outside world. There are references to the family's religious beliefs that have also made the situation harder. The older brother Zeke is resentful of Gage and questions his authority and leadership during the crisis. They are alone on a mountain with no electricity and no other neighbors around. To occupy the children, Gage begins to tell the story of a tooth fairy (skibbereen) who is born an orphan and has no knowledge of who or what he is. Quite by accident he is named "What the Dickens." He begins to search around for his place in the world as he sees it. He finds Pepper as she is taking a tooth for the skiberee colony. He follows her to the colony and begins to understand the culture and nature of the skiberee. He falls in love with Pepper and takes on a final mission with her to help her become an Agent of Change, or tooth fairy. In the end, What the Dickens discovers that he is unique in his beliefs as he negotiates for his life and Pepper's. This is a good book, and well worth reading.

Down Sand Mountain
Written by Steve Watkins
This is the story of Dewey Turner -- a misfit seventh grader. In Florida in the 1960s race is an issue that most people want to ignore. So, when Dewey paints his face black with shoe polish to practice for next year's minstrel show he sets himself up for all kinds of misery. The polish will not come off completely and so Dewey must begin school with his face still black. His classmates want to ignore him and the older students try to keep him out of the restrooms by making signs that read "whites only." Dewey has a hard time making friends and relating to others, but he finds a friend in Darla Turkel. Darla is a dancer and an actress who also does not fit in. Dewey, Darla, and Wayne (Dewey's older brother) begin to investigate a ghost story in the downtown area. The answer turns out to be one that neither Darla or Dewey expect. Also, Dewey and Wayne spend part of their time helping their father run for city council. Sand Mountain turns out to be a pile of sand tailing left over from mining. People in the area use the mountain like a snowboarding hill, riding down the mountain on pieces of cardboard. This book explores the racial issues of the South, as well as issues facing Vietnam veterans. The book contains sexual content that may not be appropriate for younger readers.

Kori and Serena did not know when they first met what a great friendship would develop. Kori was the "dark angel' type: she was beautiful, mysterious, and always talked about behind her back. Serena was what you would consider the average type, never really noticed by those around her. Two years have passed and the girls, having grown so very close in the meantime, are now sophomores. They're given an assignment to list the five things they want to happen in the next six months--their five ways to tempt fate. Then tragedy strikes Kori, and Kori's list of five things becomes an important artifact to help figuring out the mystery behind her tragedy. Serena finds it important to follow through with Kori's desire not to leave anything undone.

Number the Stars
Written by Lois Lowry
The 1990 Newbery Award Medal winner, this book is set in Denmark during WWII. A fictional family placed in actual events, this tells of the effort to help the Jews escape Hitler's forces. The story is lovely despite the subject and shows the warmth and humanity that triumphed over the evil of that time. It is a well told story and appropriate for even younger grades in my opinion. It emphasizes courage and ingenuity in the face of fear.

Top 8
Written by Katie Finn
Madison has her profile on "Friendverse" and lists the top 8 of her friends there. She is a slave to her computer, her cell phone and the like. However, she leaves them all behind for spring break as she travels with her family to Ecuador, of all places. When she returns home, she finds that someone has hacked into her profile and said some pretty nasty things about all her "friends" and even her boyfriend. Some of the book is written in text message and blogs. Madison is trying to solve the mystery of who hacked into her space and trying to undo the damage done. She discovers some interesting things about herself, finds a new boyfriend and makes some changes in her life. The book probably would be fun for those who have profiles on Myspace and spend much of their time communicating with text messages, etc.

This book is about a very outgoing and cheerful duck that is very attached to a certain lovable red sweater. Throughout her travels, her sweater slowly becomes unraveled with the help of her playful puppy. The climax of the story is when Muriel discovers the disintegration of her precious sweater. Her friends show their empathy for her loss and present her with a new sweater (however the new one is blue) at a surprise birthday party that they throw in honor of her. The book has great colorful illustrations which are very inviting to the prospective reader. It contains a great narrative plot with several opportunities to stop and discuss elements of problem solving. The story line carries strong themes of community and meaningful friendship. Mostly Monty
Written by Johanna Hurwitz, Illustrated by Anik McGrory
This book is about a boy named Monty that has many insecurities about himself and his abilities. He faces the challenge of going to school and learns to accept others into his life and by so doing learns to accept himself. This book has a high relatability factor. While reading this book, students have many opportunities to make personal connections with the character and life events of Monty. One of its assets is that it contains more pictures than typical chapter books, adding to its appeal to a reader. This book tackles sensitive issues in appropriate ways such as a touch on the subject of death and other emotional issues that many elementary aged children face, can relate to, or just have questions about. The highlight of the book is when Monty experiences his friends rally around him and help to dispel his insecurities about himself. This book would be perfect for an educator to utilize in literature circles. There are many poignant places in the book to spur on deep discussion among peers and opportunities to reflect on the consequences of good moral character and also those when better choices could have been made. The book also contains subtle connections to the life cycle of a caterpillar, which could be a small support to the science curriculum of certain grade levels.

The story has great discussions on friendship, trust, and asking for forgiveness: all important lessons for everyone. Of course, Sylvia is the one getting the scoop from Amber knowing that Peggy is near enough to hear. When Peggy can't handle it any longer, she runs out and heads to her room. When she sees Mary, she doesn't know what to do; should she tell or not tell? She is really confused and decides to wait until she knows for sure that the rumor is real and not a lie. Sylvia on the other hand decides to take action and tells Mary. Mary can't believe it and starts to find out the truth. Peggy is stuck in the middle with all of the mess. At the end, you discover there are many problems going on and the truth comes out.
In conclusion, this book had everything; drama, mystery, and a couple of fights. I liked this book because it showed friendship, honesty, and also that a rumor has a little truth to it. It also showed that there is no such thing as a perfect boyfriend or girlfriend.

Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully
Written by Julianne Moore, Illustrated by LeUyen Pham
A cute story of a little girl named Freckleface Strawberry. She loves to go to Early Bird, where kids get to play outside before school starts, playing anything she wants to. Unless it's raining, which means playing dodgeball in the school gym. She has a fear of a boy, Windy Pants Patrick, who throws a very mean ball. Freckleface Strawberry comes up with a plan for dealing with her dilemma by inventing a monster. The artwork is very entertaining with bright color illustrations done with a Japanese brush pen, revealing the characters' fear and emotions. Not many bullies could be so easily defeated, but in a story for young children, a lesson in how to stand up for oneself is always welcome!

When You Reach Me (Featured Elementary Fiction Review)
Written by Rebecca Stead
(When You Reach Me, page 2)
Young readers will immediately identify with the believable voice of Miranda, particularly as she navigates the tough social world of sixth grade. In fact, all of the characters are engaging and fully-realized. The storyline is extremely enveloping. Smart, shifting narrative that jumps forward and back in time keeps the clues and ideas coming without revealing too much. However, what puts this book into the running for greatness is that the day-to-day interactions of Miranda with her friends and her mother are just as captivating as the bizarre happenings with the notes, and often the notes totally escape your mind, just as they do Miranda’s. The realistic and the speculative are on entirely equal terms.
It could be easy to take for granted just how perfectly When You Reach Me fulfills the dictates of a great children’s novel. The book is clever and intricate, but not confusing. It introduces many big ideas and morals, but in small and subtle ways. It’s a relatively high interest read, and yet it also could hold up to the scrutiny of any elementary upper grade language arts curriculum. For the quality of this book and its likely ability to please young people, educators, and parents all at the same time, it seems like a serious contender for the Newbery. Indeed, search the Internet and you will find many people saying so. Unfortunately, it’s possible that such a little book could be smothered by the hype that has preceded it and that this review further promulgates, as new readers may come to it with unreal expectations. Remember, it’s not a book unlike anything you’ve ever read, it’s not a grandiose fantasy, and it’s probably never going to sell five million copies and give rise to a series of blockbuster movies. It’s just a little novel done extremely well, which turns out to be a rare thing.

Best Friends
Written by Jacqueline Wilson, Illustrated by Nick Sharratt
Born on the same day in the same hospital, Gemma and Alice are best friends. Gemma is a tomboy that acts up in school, while Alice is a proper student and loves anything pink. Although they may be complete opposites, nothing ever comes between their friendship, until Alice has to move hundreds of miles away. Follow Gemma as she learns how to survive her best friend leaving. The illustrations are fun and are great to use for predicting what will happen in the next chapter. The characters in the book are believable and the story is one that many can sympathize with. The terminology in the book can be a little confusing for those that are not familiar with British English. The use of the term "sex maniac" was not appreciated in a book for younger children. Overall the book was fun and engaging.Review by Lisa Grieve, 4th Grade Teacher, Robert Frost Elementary School

To do so, however, she must learn to trust her instincts and make alliances. Will Moxie find it in herself to trust the allies she seeks? Will she be able to follow her instincts to save her friend from Blackburn? The writing in this book is choppy and amateur in style. However, this is probably an accurate depiction of a dog telling the story. The book and its characters are endearing and the adventure is fun to read.
