What’s cool about this book is the end pages are types of seashells with their names so that you can find the shells in the book. The seashells throughout the book are actual photographs, and the pretty story illustrations are done in watercolor and charcoal. The story starts at the beach where a little girl gathers shells. From there you go on an imaginative journey of what shells could be, almost as if the girl is now at home playing make-believe with the gathered shells that could be tires, a hat, a ferris wheel, a raft, and much more. My initial response was that while I like the idea of using real shells mixed, I would rather have been shown where the shells came from in the ocean. The story seems kinda random. But I guess if it were a kid playing with shells and imagining what they could be used for, it makes more sense. I think the storyline is missing a little something, but it’s fun to look for shells. For grades PreK-2.
