The Long Way Around

Written by Anne Nesbet

A great adventure tale with just the right amount of peril, plus some hiking and camping survival tips seamlessly woven in to the story. Sisters Vivian and Amy go with their cousin Owen on a hiking trip. They part ways with their parents, who have agreed to let the kids camp overnight at their own lake. An earthquake makes the trail back to their parents impassable, forcing the kids to follow an old route on the map. Luckily their uncle had pointed it out to them. Owen estimates the mileage and carefully portions out the food he packed. Along the way they encounter wild animals, a raging river, and even a badly injured hiker. All the hiking gives them time to discuss their real world troubles—anxiety over starting middle school and lingering trauma from a car accident. The characters are well developed and not flawless in their struggles along the way. They persevere and succeed in reaching a ranger’s hut. They give each other trail nicknames, fitting the adventure they’ve had. Of course the natural setting is a vibrant part of the story.
