Ruth White typically write historical fiction, but in You’ll Like it Here (Everybody Does), she tries her hand at science fiction. This is a story about Meggie Blues and her family living in a futuristic society where individualism is not tolerated. In Fashion City, a utopian society set in the future, people are controlled by “Lotus pills” and brainwashing – to suppress their “grossly unique” qualities and work in the factories for “the Fathers.” When blue streaks appear in the kids’ hair, they have achieved maturity. However, the streaks must be suppressed (with vinegar), lest people discover they are in fact aliens. Once grandpa is taken to “Vacation 65” the family may never see him again, and must make their escape. Readers will find this an interesting book, despite some implausible events and “heavy” content.
