This story takes us back to Italy during World War II at the time of the German occupation. There were different political groups in Italy during that time and this story does a nice job explaining the differences within the context of the story of 13 year old Paulo and his family. There’s action, adventure and mystery. It’s also a great story of a family sticking together through very difficult times to help each other and the war effort. Hero on a Bicycle is a great way for children to understand the horrors and risks of war without being too graphic or inappropriate.
