This is a delightful book about witches. Rupert lives with his mother, who forbids him to talk to a witches and especially to stay out of the part of town where they live. Rupert is in the 5th grade and he has a positively horrible teacher named Ms. Frabbleknacker. Ms. Frabbleknacker not only smells bad but she will not let the children be friends with each other. All this together with an extreme interest in witches, is what motivates Rupert to apply to be a witch’s apprentice. He becomes apprenticed to a young witch—one about Rupert’s age—who is trying to pass the witches bar exam and become a full fledged witch. Her name is Witchling two. She is very fun to be with and the job is exciting.
The story takes some very interesting twists and turns that ends with Rupert and Witchling two becoming fast friends and Rupert understanding his mother. It isn’t a high adventure book but it keeps you interested as you try to figure out how things will really turn out. It is a great book to teach about friendship and trust. I really enjoyed reading this book. I would definitely recommend it, especially to a good elementary school reader. What a fun book it would be to read just before Halloween.
