This story, based on fact, is about Billy Blah, a 16 year old Eskimo girl in Greenland and her friendship with Robert Peary. It tells about Billy’s subsistence life in Greenland as well as her trip to America on a ship with Peary. Billy is a very strong young woman who must make many hard choices in her life. The author paints an accurate picture of the time period and takes us through the way of life, hunting and surviving the cold, that these people had to endure. It makes me appreciate living in a warm house and the ability to get groceries from the local store. The writing is very descriptive and we can picture what it must have been like to live in extreme cold. I would recommend this book to high school aged students.
