This is a very touching story of a twelve-year-old girl who recently lost her mother to cancer and keeps a jar of wishes, something she and her mother started. Her father takes her to the Arctic for the summer where he is conducting whale research. She learns of the Narwhals, the unicorns of the sea, from the native peoples and hopes if she sees them they can grant her wish to see her mother again and say good-bye. Through her hopes and disappointments she learns her father misses her mother as much as she does and if they work through their grief together it will close the gap between them. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy a sensitive, loving story of hopes and dreams and fantasy and overcoming grief. I think 4th through 6th grade girls will really enjoy this book.
