This is a story set during World War II. Two Jewish sisters, Stephie and Nellie, have been sent to an island in Sweden by their parents where they are taken in by two different families. Sadly their parents are being held in a Nazi camp, which causes older sister Stephie a great deal of distress. She feels responsible for her little sister and responsible to help her parents with much needed food and warm clothes.
The story progresses over a four year period of time. I think the author does a good job of demonstrating how Sweden, though technically neutral in the war, is very much affected. She also addresses many topics through the eyes of these refugee girls such as prejudice, loneliness, and loyalty.
I enjoyed this read.
