Waiting

WaitingBy Kevin Henkes

This book is absolutely enchanting. I just loved it. An owl, a pig holding an umbrella, a bear holding a kite, a puppy on a sled, and a rabbit with stars are all toys sitting together on a window. Each is waiting for something different to happen. New friends come and go from the window sill. Time passes, the seasons change. All the friends are waiting to see what will happen next.

Kevin Henkes is a wonderful picture book author and illustrator. This book is so simple. The beautiful illustrations have muted colors on large cream colored pages. The idea that everybody is waiting for something special to happen is one that small children can relate to. I am so excited to share this with my students. One of the best picture books I have seen in a while.

This is in our Book Fair this week! I’ll be sure to purchase it for the library! I love Kevin Henkes books and illustrations.

  2. GIVEAWAY ALERT! We have 13 copies of Waiting available for teachers and library staff members in Granite School District! To the first 13 commenters below we will send a copy via district mail for your school library or classroom library. If you already have this book in your library you may also pass it along to a student as a prize giveaway. Enjoy!

  3. With most of our money spent this year, we haven’t purchased this book, but it would be a great addition to our library. Thanks Josh and company for doing these giveaways…and for the tips to help us find them.

  4. There are still 4 copies left! Teachers are eligible as well for their classroom library. Also, if you already have a library copy you can use these particular books as a prize for a student or teacher.

  5. I have been reading “Waiting” with my students for storytime this week. They are so excited about our new Caldecott for this year. We played a memory game after we read it. You can print out the memory cards from the Kevin Henkes website. En joy!
