Secrets of Selkie Bay

Secrets of Selkie BayWritten by Shelley Moore Thomas

Isn’t it interesting that our well-being is so closely linked to the well-being of our family? While it is true that we can grow from all challenges, we are most at peace when we are at peace with our family. Thomas illustrates this fact in Selkie Bay. There is a rise and fall to her storytelling akin to both the rise and fall of the waves in the Bay and to the conflicting emotions felt by Cordie, the young girl who narrates the story. Cordie is 11 and feels the pressure of caring for her sisters after their mother mysteriously disappears. To help 8 year old Ione cope, Cordie weaves the mythical tale of selkies into the disappearance of their beloved mother. There are many secrets here. Some are revealed and others are left for the reader to discover on their own. This is a touching story of perseverance, hope, and the importance of family.
