Stink, #10
Written by Megan McDonald, Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds
This is the 10th book about Stink and his friends. Of course he is also in the Judy Moody series. This is a nice book that young readers will enjoy – especially if they like slime. There is a lot of oozing in the book.
The writing and graphic portions of the book are really well blended throughout. It is a fun book to read. Going between pictures, words, comic strips and posters of events is imaginative and engaging. The captain’s logs are great ways to share note-taking and summarizing. Some of the references might be missed by young readers since not everyone is familiar with Star Trek at such a young age. Those who are will really enjoy the star logs and other references. Even those who are not familiar with Star Trek will be able to relate to note-taking and reflections on events.
Peter H. Reynolds’ pictures are friendly — even when they show Frankenslime or slime mold. Readers will enjoy the drawings. There is a nice balance of small, medium and large pictures throughout. Some pictures are almost like movie posters. There are small stories in the larger story that are told in comic strip style. The transitions between different writings and drawings is smooth. There is a lot of humor in both the writing and the drawings.
Readers will have fun with this book.
