Written by Jennifer A. Nielsen
Ani Mels is a young girl living in the river country of Keldan. Despised by the townspeople (who refer to them as “Grubs”) the river people are isolated from most of society. So, when Ani is captured by the Governor’s wardens and tested for the dreaded Scourge she is shocked to find out that she tests positive for the plague. Sent to die on Attic Island with the rest of the afflicted, Ani is determined to fight for survival. However, she, along with her best friend Weevil, soon find out that Attic Island has many secrets and things are not what they seem to the outside world. This is an adventure that is filled with mystery and intrigue and really keeps the reader guessing up until the end on who the villains of the story really are. Jennifer A. Nielsen is a terrific author and her novels are always entertaining and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book for 5th grade and up.
