My kindergarten class unanimously liked this book (we voted.) The illustrations were great at depicting what was happening in the story. We loved that he was fishing for letters instead of fish. Letters are everything in kindergarten so we had fun guessing what the different letters were. One student liked how hard he worked to get the letter “H.” We thought it was because he wanted to spell the word fish but it was not until the end of the story that we found out he needed those letters to make the word “finish.” I needed to point out to the students on page one that there was someone running and a boy going fishing. When we were at the end of the book we realized why there was a runner on the first page.
As a teacher I liked the book as it reinforced many standards we are working on like letter recognition, comparing letters to words, spelling, attention to illustrations and details, prediction and more. The students seemed to really just love the adventure the boy was on. Great book!
