Lucky Strikes

Written by Louis Bayard

I have a college student who requests books to review to enlarge our school library. This is a book that appealed to her and so she took it. She brought it back to me and told me she would not finish it because it was filled with profanity. So it was left to me to read and review. I read 25 pages and I also REFUSE to read this book. There are about 3 profanities per page that I read. I do not think this book is appropriate for the intended audience of 4-6 graders. I do not want it in my school library.

The story is about a 12 year old girl with younger siblings who finds herself the adult in charge. She takes over her mother’s gas station to support her family after her mother dies. (She never knew her father.) It seems like the story was about her relationship with the truckers who stopped in regularly to fill up and visit and a nefarious character who is the gas station competition in the town. That is really all I can deduce from what I read. It probably would have been a darling story if the language weren’t so harsh and offensive.
