One of my goals as a media clerk is to find books that represent our diverse student body. The book One of a Kind introduces us to a child who likes loud music, sports a mohawk hairdo, and likes to “march to his own beat.” Although he likes being “one of a kind,” he also feels a little lonely. then he meets a couple of other kids he can relate to and they create something special. The story is told from the boy’s perspective and his experience feels authentic. The artwork—“screenprint-like images” give us a helpful glimpse of the narrator and his friends. I am excited to include this book in our school library!
