This series is one I cannot put down. The characters have a lot of complexity, and there is something for everyone in the plot. Romance, sword-fighting, explosions, ghostly possession and more await as Laia of Serra continues the fight to bring justice for her people against the impending doom promised by the Nightbringer. Told from the perspectives of Laia, Elias the Soul Catcher, and Helene Aquilla, the Blood Shrike or right-hand soldier under the command of the seriously deranged Emperor Marcus, the reader is treated to a rich story that is fast-paced. I would recommend this book for upper middle grades and high school – there is some intermittent language which may be unsuitable for younger readers, as well as more complicated themes of spousal abuse, sex and pregnancy/delivery.
