Written by Meredith Davis and Rebeka Uwitonze
Her Own Two Feet is an inspiring story. Rebecca Uwitonze lives in Rwanda. She was born with her feet so twisted that when she could walk, she walked on the top of her feet. It was very painful. Mostly she had to crawl or be carried. She has the opportunity to come to the United States and live with the Davis family and have her feet treated so she will be able to walk again.
The Davis family is amazing. They help her and give her amazing opportunities. The most wonderful part of this story is Rebeka. She has to overcome the fear and anxiety of being away from her parents and siblings (she is very close to her sister, Medea). Also she has to deal with language barriers. After being in America for a year she returns to Rwanda and cannot understand her family at first. In addition, she has to deal with being in the hospital and with the intense pain that is part of her healing process.
She comes to America not knowing what will happen to her. She knows that her family tells her: “Awahirwe aza rimwe”, Chance come once. She is a very brave, resilient girl who takes that chance and runs with it.
I loved the feeling of inspiration this book gives!!
