Whilst the Rules for Vanishing tagline is, “Anyone can follow the road but few will leave it alive,” anyone could pick up this book. And many will finish it. The book starts with an interrogation interview and text conversation, and the reader is left perplexed. Cue the traditional introductory chapters setting the scene of high school kids (sometimes difficult to remember who is who) being intrigued by local ghost stories and recent disappearances. Kate Alice Marshall’s second novel weaves between present day conversations with handwritten testimonies of the events of April 19, 2017 in the woods. The 400 page novel incorporates themes of young adult, horror, and mystery. A piece of advice would be to keep a notepad nearby to record the names of characters and their summaries. A perfect book for a high school student wanting to enter the YA-horror genre.
