Dear Justyce

Read this book in Granite’s Sora

Written by Nic Stone

Dear Martin was such a compelling story, I wanted to read more about the characters in that world. So, I picked up Dear Justyce. Dear Justyce is definitely in the same world but from a completely different perspective. After Justyce’s best friend, Manny, was shot and killed, he heard from Quan. Quan, who is in a detention center awaiting his day in court, is Manny’s cousin. Quan reached out to Justyce and they began a kind of friendship. This is Quan’s story in letters written to Justyce. Growing up in a rough situation, with his father in prison, Quan tried to stay out of trouble. That was hard to do.

Quan is a compelling character and I didn’t have a hard time rooting for him to find his way out of the difficult life he was in. This book felt a little more choppy than Dear Martin in its backflashes mixed with the current letters, but it didn’t stop me from wanting to get to the end of the book. Good read about relevant topics that affect our current society. If you liked Dear Martin this is a good follow up story, yet it can stand alone as well.
