Written by Jess Keating, Illustrated by David DeGrand
Did you know the Atlas moth can’t eat as an adult and will only survive one to two weeks before it starves? Big as a Giant Snail, which is one of the books in Jesse Keating’s “The World of Weird Animals” series, shares fascinating, little-known facts about gigantic animals. She is a master at presenting facts in fun, colorful, and engaging layouts. Each layout effectively combines a photo, an attention-grabbing introduction, and interesting, far-out, weird facts with general information, such as of size, diet, habitat, predators, and threats. She measures the animal in inches and feet, but also in bananas (6 inches=one banana) to better help kids conceptualize the size of the animal. An anaconda can be up to 60 bananas long! Kids will love this nonfiction genre book.
