Written by Susan Fletcher, Illustrated by Rebecca Green
I absolutely loved this book. Depicting a true story, it tells of when the King of Norway gave King Henry III a captured polar bear as a gift, adding it to his exotic animal menagerie.
The author goes through what most likely would have happened to the bear from birth to his life in captivity in Medieval England. I love how the illustrations look a lot like Medieval artwork to fit with the time period. But most of all, I love the way the author shows how sad and disturbing it is to take animals away from their homes and not treat them right. This would be a great read-aloud for the kids to learn more about polar bears and Medieval Europe, as well as how important it is to treat animals with kindness.
