Written by Lily LaMotte, Illustrated by Michelle Lee
Chloe’s Lunar New Year, by Lily LaMotte, is a sweet story about a Taiwanese family preparing for and celebrating the new year. It takes place on the night of the reunion dinner where everyone in Chloe’s family gathers for food, celebration, and remembrance. Chloe and her brother Noah help clean the house, throw out old shoes and receive new. They help make turnip cake, prepare steamed fish, hot pot, fortune cakes, apple pie, and stack good luck oranges for the feast. Their grandmother, A-ma, is included as the family prepares, and food is placed on a memorial shrine as part of the feast. This book represents so much good, honoring loved ones who have passed, celebrating old and new traditions, family togetherness, and of course tasty food. The illustrations by Michele Lee are simply lovely.
