The Baker by the Sea

Written and Illustrated by Paula White

This picture book does a wonderful job of detailing the inner workings of a small seaside town and how everyone in it provides for everyone else in some way or another. The main character starts out wanting to be a fisherman when he grows up, working hard on a ship through storm and cold, to supply fish for the fish markets. His father, however, is a baker and he tells his son why he is just as important as the fishermen. This is a wonderful learning tool to show students how every cog in a community is vital for a community to succeed. The writing is informative and beautiful and the illustrations are phenomenal. I highly recommend this book.
