24 Hours on Planet Earth
Written by Nicola Davies, Illustrated by Jenni Desmond
Ever wonder what’s happening on Planet Earth right now, in this very minute?
It’s April 21st, one minute to midnight in Greenwich, London, and the reader travels on a journey with two curious and sleepless girls in pajamas around the globe during the same minute of time. As it is midnight in England, it’s morning far to the east, and still just afternoon far to the west. Each page jumps to a different time zone and depicts what might be happening there at that moment of time, showing the current time (in small print) relative to 12:00 a.m. London time (GMT). This is a fun way to see how time zones vary as Earth rotates throughout a day. But the book also focuses on climate change, pollution and how man’s use of natural resources is endangering many animal species. The end notes, written by both the author and the illustrator, speak to the ways we can be better stewards of planet Earth. Overall, the story is clever and the watercolor illustrations are fun.
