The Book of Turtles

Written by Sy Montgomery, Illustrated by Matt Patterson

BIG life-like illustrations of various turtles cover every page of this beautiful book, and each turtle is discretely labeled as to what kind it is. I learned interesting facts while enjoying the artwork. Did you know there are over 300 different kinds of turtles? This book tells where they live, and how they survive. There are turtles with soft shells, turtles with necks longer than their bodies, and turtles whose shells glow in the dark. Turtles, it turns out, are intelligent animals and each come with their own personality. Some are shy, some are curious, some like their necks rubbed, while others like their shell scratched. Turtles have talents you would never have suspected, like climbing chain-link fences! In reading this book, I gained more of an appreciation for turtles and the role they play in the earth’s ecosystem. This would be a great addition to the children’s nonfiction section of a library.
