From Here to There

A First Book of Maps

Written by Vivian French, Illustrated by Ya-Ling Huang

Remember in the olden days unfolding a map and using it for directions? In this story, Anna’s friend, Zane, wrote her a letter and included a map. Except Anna thinks it should look different, so her dad gives her some paper to make her own map. She then learns all about maps and how they work.

This book would be a great way to introduce children to maps, mapmaking, and how to use them. I liked how the author shows different kinds of maps and different parts on a map, but kept it simple and easy to understand. The illustrations are colorful for young readers. This would be a great supplement when teaching about communities in the classroom.
