Ghostlight

Written by Kenneth Oppel

Gabe doesn’t believe in ghosts, until he meets one! Gabe has a summer job leading ghost tours of the Gibraltar Point lighthouse, so when he meets Rebecca, a real ghost who is looking for his help, his world is turned upside down. This book was a good ghost story with a great mix of intrigue, excitement, history, and mild horror. It has a good villain in a ghost who eats other ghosts and wants to take over the living world; plus tidbits of history about the Toronto area. I felt this book had a unique plot from most ghost stories. This book also deals well with loss, family trauma, and questions about death without agenda or judgement. I think this would be a good choice for 4-6th graders who like ghost stories and kids saving the world (while the grownups are in the dark of course!)
