Sora’s Seashells

Written by Helena Ku Rhee, Illustrated by Stella Lim

Sora and her Halmoni always go to the beach and collect seashells whenever Halmoni visits. Sora takes all her shells home, but Halmoni leaves her most beautiful one on a bench as a gift.

Oh my, this is a book to be cherished. First, the gentle illustrations are fitting for this heartwarming story. They capture the feelings and memories beautifully. Second, the many layers to this story make this narrative a memorable one for young children. The book deals with the grief of losing a loved one, being teased at school, honoring a loved one, cherishing one’s name, acts of kindness, and the vulnerability that connects us as humans.

After her grandmother’s passing, Sora is able to find new meaning in their seashell collecting. Readers too, will find new meaning and might need a tissue or two.
