The summer before middle school Loretta decides it is time for her twin brother, Waylon, to learn to take care of himself. She has been his protector all through elementary school, but next year they are not always going to be together. Her plan is to toughen him up over the summer. Mom and Dad put them in a Summer Day Camp in separate classes…this is the perfect situation. Waylon has his own agenda, to explore the woods behind his house…which turns into a learning curve for them both. Making friends with the Spirit Animals of the Forest, a mystery boy in the woods, a first girlfriend, and an unexpected frenemy are just a few relationships that develop among the characters. A mysterious box leads them on adventures of “self-sacrifice” and ” rites of passage” that bring changes into their lives as well as those of others.
