The Mythics: Marina and the Kraken

Written by Lauren Magaziner, Illustrated by Mirelle Ortega

Okay… how do I describe this book? Imagine a friendly version of The Giver in which at a certain age, each child undergoes a ceremony, but in this version, the ceremony connects children to their “familiar.” A “familiar” is an animal that stays with the person throughout their life, much like a lifelong friend. But, when Marina’s ceremony does not go as planned, she meets up with four other girls from various cities with the same situation to find their familiar. Their familiars, however, are mythical creatures, known as their “Mythies.” This then changes the story to an adventure in finding their mythies, and gives a strong resemblance to the mythical adventure of the first Percy Jackson book. Overall, a very fun, easy book! I have already ordered the second in the series for us!
