A Horse Named Sky

Read or listen to this book and series in Granite’s Sora!

Written by Rosanne Parry, Illustrated by Kirbi Fagan

Sky is a wild mustang that lives on a free roaming range in Nevada during the 1860s. The story is told through his point of view. Young Sky was born to run, and for much of his young life, he used his natural ability to run and find fresh water and abundant grazing for the horses in his herd. Colts do not typically stay with their herd forever, and when it is Sky’s time to flee the herd, he tackles life on his own. He ends up being captured by humans and forced to run for the Pony Express. Will Sky ever break free from captivity and return to his herd as a stallion? Read to find out!

Sky’s story is about not always being the strongest or the wisest, but knowing when to believe in yourself and to take the risks in front of you. This book is a stand-alone companion to A Wolf Called Wander and A Whale of the Wild.

What I loved most about this book is the wide appeal it will have to young readers. The book is fewer in pages than many middle grade novels and the illustrations are enthralling. Although it is a fictional story, it shares a piece of history. The interesting back matter with the history of horses, the habitats, pictures, and maps will actually be read. This book is a true middle grade reader and a great choice for libraries with grades 3-7.
