This is a fun story about a girl trying to learn to be responsible so she can have a comforting pet when her best friend moves away. While the story is not exactly original, the perspective is unique, and the character growth is fun and relatable. I especially like how Rica draws inspiration not only from people who are older than her but also from a younger child whose courage gives Rica strength as well.
Rica’s story provides a good “mirror” for Black kids, with some brief mentions of how others interact with Rica (calling her and her white best friend the “Checkerboard” friends, expecting her to be friends with other Black kids just because of their skin color, et cetera) and shows healthy coping mechanisms that Rica has taught herself.
Be aware that Rica keeps a prayer journal with notes to God. This can be uplifting and inspiring for some kids yet might make others uncomfortable. I quite enjoy it as it shows a spiritual way to practice mindfulness.
