Written by Carleton Bluford, Illustrated by Alisha Jones
This is a book that was donated to our school from Plan-B Theatre. The book begins with a boy named Henry who has a hard time paying attention in class, and the teacher sends him to the library to find a book that he is interested in and to make a report on it. He finds a book about a black man stepping out of the norm of his time and reaching for his dreams. It is also fun that it is about someone that grew up in Salt Lake City.
I did have an issue with the way that the book’s text is set up – everything is in speech bubbles, but its not always the first speech bubble on the page that is meant to be read first. I think that kids will enjoy it if they understand the way that the speech bubbles are meant to be read.
