Written by Jacob Sager Weinstein, Illustrated by Eliza Wheeler
This is the story of a four-year-old Jewish girl, Rosa, whose family lives in Vienna when the Nazis take over. The driving event in this tale is, though Rosa and her parents are able to travel to the America, they have to leave behind her grandmother. A terrible truth communicated so simply in words, and portrayed so sensitively in pictures. The image of the grandmother sitting in her armchair with a single lamp, the ghost of the family’s packed possessions still on the wall. Rosa receives comfort as her grandmother gives her love to her granddaughter that she cradles in her hands and holds in her heart. This story of sacrifice and love is simply worded for young readers and powerfully illustrated. It is also based on the true events of the author’s mother.
