Written by Kate DiCamillo, Illustrated by Carmen Mok
Everything about this book is delightful- from the embossed title letters on the cover, to the sweet story, to the gentle illustrations. Orris is a rat with only a few treasured objects to keep him company in his barn nest. When confronted with helping a natural enemy, Orris wrestles with making “the good and noble choice.” Stories bring these unlikely friends together, including the tale of The Lion and the Mouse, fittingly.
In true DiCamillo fashion, the characters are quirky and charming. Mok’s illustrations feel timeless. This will appeal to younger grades, although even upper elementary students will enjoy this quick read. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
