They Built Me For Freedom

Written by Tonya Duncan Ellis, Illustrated by Jenin Mohammed

This is a picture book that tells the story of Juneteenth and Houston’s Emancipation Park. Juneteenth is a newer holiday and some students may not know a lot about it or why we celebrate it, especially since it happens when school is not in session. The illustrations are fantastic and the book could easily be used as a starting point for lessons on Slavery, Freedom, and Human Rights.
