Barracoon

Adapted for Young Readers

Written by Zora Neale Hurston, Adapted by Ibram X. Kendi, Illustrated by Jazzmen Lee-Johnson

This book is the life story of a man who was one of the last people to be transported from Africa and sold as a slave in America. It offers a different view point of the Atlantic human trade than is typically used. The story is adapted for children from the original, so it is sometimes vague when talking about what was endured. In spite of that, it encourages empathy and understanding around the issue of slavery and discrimination.
