First Day, Hooray!

Written by June Sobel, Illustrated by Nabila Adani

First Day, Hooray! is a beautifully illustrated book that discusses the emotions kids feel on the first day of school. The illustrations and words combine to make a visually stirring representation of lots of different emotions like anger, sadness, happiness, etc. The overall theme of the book is identifying emotions and positive talk to deal with them. My favorite part of this book is the way the illustrator depicted each emotion, but the prose fell a little flat for me throughout. I specifically didn’t love one part where it says that it’s time to “pack up our feelings.” It seemed to go against the overall theme.

I would recommend this book because of the illustrations and the way they could connect with a child feeling big emotions.
