The Den that Octopus Built is a beautiful picture book done in ink, watercolor, and colored pencil. It’s written in the style of the “House That Jack Built” rhyme, but it’s all about the life of an octopus. The illustrations really bring you in to the bottom of the sea, where you see the octopus build a den, eat crabs, hide from predators, and lay eggs. Spoiler alert…the octopus dies, but a new baby octopus takes its place. I don’t think it’s overly sad. If you weren’t paying attention you might miss that the words meant that the octopus died. But I’d say for grades K-3.
