Birth of the Bicycle: A Bumpy History of the Bicycle in America

Written by Sarah Nelson, Illustrated by Iacopo Bruno

This nonfiction picture book shares the origins of the bicycle and how it evolved into our more modern version. I enjoyed the illustrations that showed the different details on the bikes, as well as the historically accurate clothing and hairstyles. I only wish that it had been a little longer, going into the more modern era of bikes. I turned the last page and was surprised that it had ended. There are additional facts at the end about the history of the bicycle and a fun addition of the author and illustrator drawn like people from the days of the “Bicycle Craze” in the 1890s on the back of the book. It’s a fun read for elementary school age kids who are learning to ride bikes!
