Evidence!: How Dr. John Snow Solved the Mystery of Cholera

Written by Deborah Hopkinson, Illustrated by Nik Henderson

This is the true story of how the English doctor John Snow solved the mystery of how cholera was spread. Prior to this, doctors thought it was spread by bad air, but through tracing the people who died (finding evidence!) he showed that contaminated water was the cause for Cholera. The story was told in an engaging way, without gruesome details surrounding the deaths of those who had cholera, so it’s appropriate for younger readers.

Children that like history, medical mysteries, or how this problem was solved will enjoy this book. At the end there is additional information about John Snow, who is considered the father of epidemiology, and other contagious diseases, and how scientists have helped reduce or eradicate them entirely, saving many lives. As a nonfiction reader and lover of history I really enjoyed this book!
