This latest installment of the popular Princess in Black series is sure to be a hit with its fans, a group that includes pretty much every 1st- and 2nd-grade girl who visits my school library.
Princess Magnolia (otherwise known as the Princess in Black) is tasked with taking care of a very high-maintenance kitten left on her doorstep. Shenanigans ensue every time the princess leaves to fight a monster since the cat–deprived of his owner’s attention and unsatisfied with his name–makes his displeasure known by destroying various rooms in the palace. Magnolia’s attempts to make peace with the cat, interspersed with her alter ego’s battle against a monster who won’t stop harassing goats, make up the bulk of the narrative. Big, colorful illustrations break up the text, making this a great option for young readers itching to make the leap to chapter books.
