This is a great book set during a large family gathering. In it, the main character is overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of her family, who have come together to celebrate her brother. However, she is able to find peace in the garden and through her art. Everyone can relate to being overwhelmed at times, and for students who find themselves in the same situation as the main character, it helps to know they aren’t alone. As an introvert, I found the story very relatable. The book highlights color and the emotions they relate to as well as Latin-American culture. The author’s note at the end explains how trauma affected her Cuban refugee family and how she was always able to find peace by retreating to her father’s garden, away from the overwhelming sights and sounds of her family.
