Almost Sunset

Written and Illustrated by Wahab Algarmi

A great graphic novel that explains what going to school and soccer is like for Muslims during Ramadan. So many students keep their struggles to themselves when others around them would help out and understand. It is the story about Hassan fasting from sunup until sunset, which is the custom for some Muslims. He is struggling to keep up on the soccer field and in the classroom, but he is uncomfortable talking about why he’s not eating and why he is falling asleep in class.

I love that this book is a mirror for some kids at my school celebrating Ramadan and that it gives non-Muslims a window view into family’s Ramadan customs. I chose to review this book with my Muslim students in mind, but I know it will be enjoyable and interesting for all students. The beautiful illustrations paint everyday life during Ramadan.
