Hazel Sinnett is a Lady in 19th century Edinburgh who wants to be a surgeon. Jack Currer is a resurrection man—someone who digs up dead bodies so surgeons can have corpses to practice on. When Hazel hires Jack to get her a body so she can study for the medical exam—and become the first female surgeon—dirt and sparks fly.
But this book is more than a love story. There’s also a mystery. The poor in Edinburgh are disappearing and then reappearing with missing organs or limbs. There’s also a sickness going around—the Roman Fever. Hazel inadvertently finds herself in the center of the mystery when she turns her family home into a hospital for the poor while her family is away to Bath to wait out the Roman Fever.
Anatomy: A Love Story is an immersive read with a surprising twist. To call it “a love story” reduces what this book really is: an interesting critique on gender politics in 19th century Europe, and an exploration of medical ethics. But highlighting that doesn’t appeal to the young adult readers this book is geared toward. So, sell it as a love story, and let your readers be surprised when it is so much more.
