Very Bad at Math

Written and Illustrated by Hope Larson

Here’s a refreshing graphic novel for students who struggle in math. Verity “Very” Nelson is a bright student who has dyscalculia. She is the student body president and competes on the debate team, so she is confused why math is so challenging for her. Despite working with a tutor, Very isn’t improving, and it is starting to affect her other roles. A caring teacher helps her understand dyscalculia. Of course there is a hefty dose of friendship drama, but it gets resolved.
The colorful and realistic artwork will appeal to Raina fans. This book felt heftier (240 pages) than other graphic novels, but the story moves along at an engaging pace. Despite the action taking place in middle school, it’s appropriate for elementary readers. My 5th grade son enjoyed reading it.
