Poppy’s Family Patterns

Written and Illustrated by Lauren Semmer

I highly recommend this book. A little girl rips the dress of her bunny doll. In looking for “new” fabric for the dress, they discover lots of different swatches of fabric that are from family members. For example, one is a swatch from her grandpa’s tie and her mom talks about all the memories she had with her dad and that tie. In the end her mom makes her a patchwork dress and a matching one for the bunny doll. It is a great family book and has good representation for the black community. I feel like a lot of my students will relate to this book. It also talks a lot about sewing and different patterns we can find in the world.
