The Bicycle

How an Act of Kindness Changed a Young Refugee’s Life

Written by Patricia McCormick & Mevan Babakar, Illustrated by Yas Imamura

The Bicycle is the story of a young refugee girl who is forced to flee with her family by the Iraqi government. She has to leave everything behind and feels very sad and alone. Her family is forced from one country to another until they finally find a home where they feel safe and welcome. A small act of kindness changes this girl’s life forever. This book was great from a young refugee’s perspective to give other students a small glimpse of the many challenges that refugees face. I love the message it shares about kindness and just how powerful one act of kindness can be.
