The Crane and the Keeper

How an Endangered Crane Chose a Human as Her Mate

Written by Meeg Pincus, Illustrated by Gillian Eilidh O’Mara

This powerful narrative nonfiction picture book tells the story of Walnut, a White-naped crane and her 42-year life. When rescuers unwittingly allowed newly-hatched Walnut to imprint on them, they caused the white-naped crane to believe she was another human. Fast forwarding about 20 years, readers accompany devoted conservationist, Chris Crowe, in his efforts to gain Walnut’s trust and facilitate the breeding of this vulnerable species.
The Crane and the Keeper educates children on how biologists work to save endangered species and the mannerisms of a white-naped crane. The illustrations are beautiful, with watercolor detailing. In the back matter, young readers will find more information about Walnut, White-naped cranes, Chris Crowe, and the NZCBI (Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conversation Biology Institute).
